Intramuscular Stimulation
Intramuscular Stimulation (IMS) is the use of acupuncture needles to produce a muscle contraction in order to reduce its pain and tightness. It differs from acupuncture in that it is based on the western scientific method and not Traditional Chinese medicine. Muscles can become tight and painful for many reasons: injury, illness, weakness as a result of deconditioning, disuse or post immobilization. Here at Elevation Physiotherapy, we believe that IMS is most effective as part of a multi-modal treatment approach to address not only the symptoms but to address the symptom’s causes or contributing factors. Intramuscular stimulation, manual therapy and strength/conditioning exercises are the tripod on which most treatments stand at Elevation.
